Louisiana Marine Mammals and Sea Turtle Rescue Program
Aerials—Chartering a plane, LMMSTRP flies to cover a large area in a short amount of time to keep track of marine animal populations in Louisiana waterways.
Boat Surveys—LMMSTRP gets more detailed information on specific groups of marine animals and can identify individuals and observe behaviors.
Beach Walks—Smaller area, but gives a highly detailed and accurate survey of stranded animals along Louisiana’s coastal waterways.
Data Collection—Takes samples from beached animals for research purposes to help earn more about wild populations.
Response to Live Strandings—Responds to any ill, injured or out-of-habitat marine animals. Finds them through aerials, boat surveys, beach walks or from citizens calling in a marine animal in distress. Relocates the stranded animal if healthy or brings to facility for rehabilitation.
Rehabilitate—Works with veterinary staff to cure illness, heal wounds and gain strength to prepare a rescued marine animal for a successful release back into their natural environment.
Outreach—Goes to schools and attends public events to spread the word abut LMMSTRP’s mission, teaches about conservation and recruits volunteer staff.
